3 top reasons why people crash RVs

Recreational vehicles (RVs) are much larger than passenger vehicles, so being involved in an accident with one can be devastating. It can lead to significant injuries and even death.

Anytime you’re on the road around an RV, you should be careful. It can help to understand some of the reasons why people crash these vehicles so that you can know what red flags to look for.

1. Lack of experience

For one thing, many people who are driving RVs do not own them. They have simply rented them for a vacation. They have no experience driving such a large vehicle, and it can lead to mistakes, such as miscalculating how much distance they need to stop or how much space they need to make an effective turn.

2. Blind spots

Another significant issue is that these vehicles have large blind spots. Someone driving down the interstate in an RV may decide to merge into the right lane. But there could be a small passenger car already sitting in their blind spot, and they sideswipe it as they merge, without ever having seen that car at all.

3. Fatigued driving

Finally, RV drivers are susceptible to fatigued driving. They may be going on long road trips, or they may be coming home after a week spent at a campground. They may have strict deadlines that they need to meet, so they’ll continue driving even if they feel tired. Fatigued driving is very similar to impaired driving and can lead to the same mistakes.
