Do you need a special license to drive an RV in Florida?

As a general rule, no, you do not need a special license to drive a recreational vehicle (RV) in Florida. All you need is a standard Class E license, which allows you to drive a car, a pickup truck, a 15-passenger van, a moped or an RV.

That being said, there are two important situations to keep in mind.

First of all, if someone only has a Class E learner’s license, then they are not allowed to drive a vehicle that weighs more than 8,000 pounds. This means that many RVs cannot be driven by young or inexperienced drivers. An adult must have a full Class E license with no restrictions in order to legally drive these larger vehicles.

Secondly, even with a Class E license, the vehicle generally needs to weigh less than 26,001 pounds. The majority of RVs already fit within this classification, but those driving very large recreational vehicles may need to take the weight into consideration. If the vehicle exceeds that limit, then a more advanced license may be required.

Most RV drivers do not have special training

What this means is that the average person driving an RV often does not have any more training than someone driving a small passenger car. They have not undergone additional testing, and no prior experience with a vehicle of that size is necessarily required.

This can sometimes lead to driving mistakes and accidents. An inexperienced RV driver may not understand where their blind spots are or realize that they need to make wide turns. They may accidentally cut off another vehicle because it takes longer to turn left. These drivers could cause accidents involving passenger cars, motorcyclists, pedestrians or bicyclists, especially if they fail to see them.

Those who have been injured in these types of accidents need to understand what legal options they have to seek financial compensation.
